When NASCAR racing returns to Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2015, seating capacity in the stands will be cut almost in half from its turn-of-the-millennium peak. This week, workers started tearing out 41,000 seats at the track, lowering capacity by 31 percent from 134,000 of earlier this year.
Last year, Forbes reported average NASCAR race attendance fell to 98,000 in 2012 from 130,000 in 2005. Tarps and endless rows of empty seats long ago became common sights during TV broadcasts of races.
